2084 Narrative
Set in 2084, the world is exposed to extreme climate change, forcing millions to flee from their homes. Due to widespread overpopulation people shift to the AI world and quickly become isolated. In an attempt to reject this digital transformation, two individuals discover a relic, the rotary telephone amongst piles of papers within Roche Abbey. Inspired, they aim to create a space to reconnect with the physical world away from digital distractions. Drawing from the concept of connection from the rotary telephone and letters, they create a form of communication-based rehabilitation within the site. Using the abandoned letters the individuals will remake the paper together, which they will then write on expressing their emotions and exchange with each other.
Spatial Concept
Informed by both the relic and the site, a series of buildings will accommodate individual functions of the paper making and the writing process. The six areas take form from the relics dial mechanism which the individuals follow sequentially to the end process of exchanging the letter. In response to the sites history and landscape the site is set around the water, using this to carry the paper through different stages. In aims of slowing down the processes within the space encouraging full engagement with the tasks, each space is orientated around the sun illuminating the spaces for a specific time. Materiality of the buildings are sympathetic to the site, using materials from the area and applying these with relation to the texture of the paper within each space.
