In a world where time is rationed, a sense of hurriedness and impatience looms. Civilians are indoctrinated into a society that lacks collaboration and sense of fulfilment. Landscapes are taken over; efficiency is monetised and processes of daily life are reduced to time saving solutions. ‘A Process through time’ is a counterculture that re-introduces a slower pace of life, taking inspiration from the sacred VHS tape found buried in the grounds of Roche Abbey. By studying the magnetic tapes movement, the convoluted journey was revealed, enabling a deviation from efficiency. It is through the notion of ‘process’ that the desire for instant gratification and virtual existence is reduced, restoring social relationships and appreciation of the natural world.
Spatial Concept
To honour the history of Roche Abbey’s prolific farming community, the design facilitates the process of making bread, as wheat would have been a common occurrence in the daily lives of the monks, as bread a wine was shared. Consisting of four key spaces: Meditation, a Tomb, a Workshop and Collective Worship, the process is laid out along the sun path to illuminate each activity throughout the day, providing a sense of passing time. The design aims to encourage an appreciation of slowness, which is achieved through the full exposure of the bread-making process - from seed to plate. As the visitors of the space experience the four stages, they will gain a deeper connection to the outcome, resulting in a shared sense of appreciation of the time they will have spent invested in the process.
