Project

The "Giargini per locale (Healing for Locals)” project focuses on the dynamics present in Campo San Giacomo di Rialto Square, chosen as its site. One side of the square is bustling with tourists travelling to and from the Rialto Bridge, while the other side is inhabited by locals, enjoying the tranquillity of local vintoteci.
To preserve this dynamic, the project proposes a permeable wall on the side facing the busy tourist street, creating a space for Venetians to enjoy and expand their local community. This intervention, serving as an implicit barrier, aims to provide "accidental therapy" to Venetian locals weary of over-tourism in Venice. Visitors can walk through a timber-column 'forest, feeling a sense of privacy while still partially visible to others.

Research indicates that Venetians are adversely affected by over-tourism, with the city prioritising tourists over locals. Consequently, many Venetians are relocating to nearby areas like Mestre.
To address this, the project proposes a "Social Care Establishment for Venetians" on the first floor of an existing building adjacent to the site. Inspired by Italian social care traditions, the establishment will offer hairdressing and beauty workshops to encourage community engagement and strengthen social ties.
The first floor of the barrier will host a light exhibition, inspired by Ronchamp, allowing Venetians to immerse themselves in an artistic experience and engage in activities, painting walls and floors. This serves as an 'ice-breaking' activity to foster social interaction among locals.
