Nottingham Eating Disorder Clinic
Atelier 01: Sitopia
Spatial Concept
The Pavilion summarises the overarching concepts of the whole project. The aim is to replicate the experience of an eating disorder as an educational tool that is open to the public in order to raise awareness. First-hand accounts of those who have experienced an eating disorder describe the process as long winded and unpredictable. The concept of compression and expansion aims to replicate this as a physical representation. The exposed timber structural skeleton appears raw and oppressive as they arch into the space in an irregular manner. Frosted glass elements limit visibility to add to the disorientation. This composition of skeleton and membrane type glass touches on the idea of the human form in a way that is raw and exposed and uncovers a topic that is often neglected
Project
The aim of the project is to translate the themes and concepts developed in section 1 and to realise these ideas into a functional space which is able to provide the most effective programme possible. The spaces have been organised into 3 major sections that are allocated into a private and public building. The programme covers the treatment, education and research aspects of the process and has been arranged around a central circular form to emphasise the cyclical nature of the recovery process and act as an embrace. The outer cladding system contrasts the circular form of this internal space as a call back to the initial concept. This is arranged in a non-Euclidean manner, creating a visual effect which is disorienting to look at and represents the unpredictable nature of the disorder
