Gill's Garden Gastronomy Centre
Atelier 01: Sitopia
Project
Following my site analyses and research into the site's heritage, history, and features, I discovered a rich diversity of unique qualities.
These eventually lead me to exploring the concept of 'Rebirth' to direct my project.
From a completely superficial perspective, the building's design capitalises on the existing sawtooth roof of the once, 'People's College'. Renovating the derelict brutalist architecture into a more nature inspired design, with the roof at the forefront.
It does so by incorporating features of the natural geology of the site, such as the iconic caves being represented in the timber façade, or the recurring floral motif that pays homage to the historic Nottingham Catchfly Flower which had once thrived previously, yet now faces extinction within the county.
Going deeper into the meaning behind these reintroduced elements, the project's primary goal is to revitalise the neglected history of George Gill, memorialising his intentions and selfless acts in providing the people of Nottingham a means to redefine their own future through affordable education.
It's function as a culinary school mixed with a community centre acts as a way to bridge the fragmented community, tackle homelessness, and celebrate cultural/individual diversity. In a way, 'rebirthing' the connections within the surrounding neighbourhoods, and allowing people the chance to 'rebirth' and rebuild their lives through the support of open-minded, caring people, brought together by a warm environment.
