The internal workings of a mechanical watch are very similar to that of a dynamics of a building. The scheme becomes alive when motion occurs; otherwise, it remains lifeless.
In a time where the digital world is dominating our perception of time, Loupe aims to bring new life to horology, aiming to rebuild the dying craft of watchmaking, rebirthing a new generation of artists and designers that can bring watchmaking back to life.
Based in Nottingham, this site is an excellent central hub for the idea of rebuilding the "British Made" stamp, hopefully giving it a rightful seat next to the likes of the "Swiss Made" phrase that is so highly sought after.
The scheme is built up of four key spaces:
Watchmaking Museum,
Learning Spaces,
Private & Public Workshops,
Watch Collectors Lounge.
All of these spaces focus on bringing each other together through both the architecture and the community.
Having a central site in the UK allows for many significant opportunities to be given to people in and around the nation, not only making it a local and easily accessible location but also more sustainable.
Loupe aims to be a sustainable scheme with a sustainable approach to watchmaking. Designing with intent isn't only about cutting costs and creating an effective product; it is also about being sustainable. This is something that I have strived to achieve throughout my project.
