This project features an exhibition of Roman ruins and includes a visitor centre open to all. It offers overnight accommodations for primary school students to facilitate learning about Roman and Greek mythology, particularly the story of Troy as illustrated by the ruins. This sustainable building achieves a carbon zero standard in operation with the extensive use of solar panels, air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps and water collection systems.
The program offers a linear journey through the space, leading to a bridge that spans the railway. Subtle timber huts, inspired by Peter Zumthor’s “Shelter for Roman Ruins,” provide an ambient experience for viewing authentic Roman ruins and uncovered mosaics, all protected by the nature’s natural elements. At the centre of the site, a decaying building illustrates the process of how a structure gradually transforms into ruins, documenting the cycle of life and decay that it will ultimately undergo.
