The BArch (Hons) Architecture course provides students with the professional knowledge, creative exploration, architectural understanding, environmental consciousness and practical skills that will allow them to face the challenges of the twenty-first century. The global awareness of humanity’s impact on the environment requires a change to the way human activities are performed in all societies. In architecture, the importance of the users’ wellbeing, climatic and environmental considerations, the architect’s professional and ethical responsibilities and the effect of technological innovations have increased the contextual complexity in which architects exercise their careers. To respond to these challenges, architects need to cultivate a deeper understanding and knowledge of socio-cultural, historical, environmental, and professional issues, to design architecture that can become a positive force of change in the world.

In the BArch course, we respond to these themes through two main areas that shape the programme’s ethos: Architectural Practice and Architecture & Wellbeing:
Architectural Practice:
A core aim of the BArch architecture course is to produce graduates that have the knowledge, skills and passion to enrich society by contributing to its environmental, social and cultural development and who become an asset to modern practices. Students develop excellent technical and environmental knowledge to address the evolving climatic conditions alongside developing professional skills akin to working in architectural practice.
Architectural Wellbeing:
A core aim of the BArch architecture course is to produce graduates that have the knowledge, skills and passion to enrich society by contributing to its environmental, social and cultural development and who become an asset to modern practices. Students develop excellent technical and environmental knowledge to address the evolving climatic conditions alongside developing professional skills akin to working in architectural practice.
Ethos:
Our Part 1 BArch graduates enter practice with a design ethos that enables them to comprehend the current complexities of the world alongside developing a sensitivity for cultures and communities. Ultimately, the course enables graduates to feel prepared and confident for the huge challenge ahead: to become a positive force of change for the world.
