The Level 7 Architect Apprenticeship has been designed to meet the requirements of the Institute for Apprentices standard over a period of 4 years of academic work. The Architect Apprenticeship curriculum has been designed to meet the current ARB/RIBA Part 2 and Part 3 criteria, and it is divided into two qualifications:
Part 2: Master of Architecture (MArch) Architecture in Practice
Part 3: Postgraduate Diploma in Architectural Practice (PGDip AP).
The idea of the Architect Apprenticeship is that apprentices spend 80% of their time within the employing practice (which pays both the course fees and salary), and 20% of their time ‘of the job’ on academic activities. In this way, they can earn whilst learning, while the employers are able to monitor and support their progress towards qualification.

In successful completion of both qualifications (MArch & PGDip AP) at NTU, apprentices will qualify as an architect and will be able to register with the ARB; this will signify that they are competent to lead in the processes of planning, designing and reviewing the construction of buildings. These core activities will need them to be skilled at working with the local community, clients, consultants and contractors in taking decisions about design and construction.

The course has a strong vocational nature and aims to develop design and research skills further to an apprentice’s achievement of ARB/RIBA Part 1. The Level 7 Architect Apprenticeship locates architectural design within a complex global context defined by a range of that is confronted by social, cultural and environmental challenges that demand imaginative responses in terms of cross-disciplinary research, collaborative practice, and firmly ethical behaviour. The course recognises the essential cross-cutting nature of architecture, bringing together diverse disciplines with an emphasis on reflective practice as a means of developing design creativity.
